Helping the homeless.

Mats for the Homeless

IMG_1186.jpg

"This is what God asks of you… to act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8).

Did you know that plastic grocery bags can be turned into sleeping mats which provide the homeless comfort, warmth and protection from the rain?

This ministry is a great way to serve the homeless, recycle plastic grocery bags, and have fun, all while putting your faith in action! Even if you are not a "crafty" person, you can help with this ongoing project, and it can be done at your own pace, on your own schedule. You can work individually, gather with others, or make it a family activity.

If you are interested in participating, attend one of the events listed below, call the Parish Office at 586-977-8080.

Ways to participate.

  1. Make “plarn" (plastic-yarn) balls to be given to a volunteer to crochet

  2. Crochet a mat with plarn balls made by other volunteers

  3. Complete a mat from start to finish:  Make plarn balls and crochet mat

Upcoming events.

Plarn Party
All Plarn Parties are currently cancelled due to COVID-19.

Join us at whatever time you are able. Attend by yourself, bring a friend, or bring the family (children in fourth grade and up are welcome with their parent). This is a hands-on working session for young and old! These gatherings will allow anyone newly-curious or already involved to:

  • Work together in making the plastic yarn used to crochet mats

  • Build camaraderie with fellow parishioners as we share stories and tips while we work

  • For those interested, learn how to crochet with "starter mats" that simply need to be completed—a fun way to practice new skills and help the homeless (supplies provided)

A final thought—as you work on the plarn or crochet, take time to reflect on the plight of those who are homeless, pray for them, and pray that we continue to find ways to become a sign of God's loving presence in their lives.
